TYPE OF EVENT:

  • Seasonal - Color appropriate for season.  Pastels for spring.  Browns and tans for autumn.  Orange and Black for Halloween.  Red and Green for Christmas (Unless it is a ball or gala)  When all else fails... Black is always appropriate.

  • Sports - Usually within the casual to business range depending on the event.  Black and Gold will always work here.  You can try the colors of the city that you are in if you know them.  Be careful not to wear rival colors unless you are there to cheer for your team.  You are on their turf. lol  Casual Bum to Business.

  • Happy Hours - This depends on the Venue.  The price of the menu is a good scale to judge by.  The higher the price the higher the attire.  Casual to Cocktail.

  • Tours - What is the tour?  South Shore, Sewickley or NY? lol Casual Bum to Business Casual.  Comfort is key here.

  • Festivals - Art or Tractor Truck Rally?  Try to avoid jeans for Art festivals. Casual to Business Casual.

  • Seminar / Meeting - Business Casual or Business

  • Music - Is it a bar or theater?  Casual to Cocktail.

  • Costume - What is the theme?

  • Cultural - Venue, Venue, Venue.  Even if it is a small one like an art opening reception you should not be in anything less than business casual.  If the adventure is over $100 it is almost always Cocktail.  Business Casual to Cocktail.

  • Dinner / Luncheon - Again it depends of the Venue and Event.  The same as with happy hours the price will tell you.  Fast food around the corner or dinner on Mt. Washington.  Dinner on Mt. Washington during a holiday season, Cocktail is a must.  From lunch to dinner, no matter where you go, you should step it up one level.  Casual Bum to Cocktail.

  • Reception - This term is used if the event is more than a dinner but less than a ball or gala. Try Style.Com if you are unsure.  Cocktail.

  • Gala - Unless otherwise noted... Formal
    Ball - Formal

CASUAL BUM - Anything goes!  Jeans, sneekers, shorts, short sleeved shirts, t-shirts (This style is mostly for home, grocery shopping or your favorite fast food restaurant.  Not your favorite sushi bar unless you are in an area that has tropical weather year round.)

CASUAL SPORTY - Appropriate attire and equipment for safety.  T-shirt, polo shirt, shorts, loose pants, knee pads, cups Ooowww, helmets.  What ever the sport requires with the appropriate shoes. (For Sports Participation)
Attending a Sports Event.  If the Venue is to actually watch a game, not for dinners or auctions.  Black and Gold of course. lol.  Something comfortable and preparing for the whether.

CASUAL -
To possess casual power for work, wear jeans with a good quality collared shirt, blouse, or pullover. The shirt or top must have long sleeves, and preferably be a solid colorCasual for going out consists of dress pants with a simple shirt.  Something that fits your personality of course.

BUSINESS CASUAL - Business casual may not be what you think it is.  If you are in jeans you are not business casual.  This is almost a suit only with a dressy shirt instead of a jacket and, depending on gender, a tie.

DRESSY CASUAL - We have just added this one.  It is difficult to explain not quite dressed up but not casual.  Not Business but not casual.  So ta da dressy casual or comfortable elegance.

BUSINESS - Suit, Jacket, Tie, Dress Shirt, Nice Shoes.  The works.

PARTY - Party attire is difficult.  It is usually trendy over comfort.  It could be cocktail or business depending on the Venue.  Tips for the ladies.  It is appropriate to either expose a lot of skin or where something tight but not both at once.  Together this attire would be called Trashy.  Trashy could get you a date but not respect.  So... high collar and tight or low-cleavage with a jacket.  Men, we love the Hawaiian shirts But not at a night club or dinner, unless it is the theme of the party or event.  You are adorable in them at the beach too.

COSTUME – A style of dress characteristic of a particular country, period, or people, often worn in a play or at a masquerade. An outfit or a disguise worn on Mardi Gras, Halloween, or similar occasions.

MASQUERADE – 2 types of masks hand- held and half masks.  A costume party at which masks are worn; a masked ball.  A costume for such a party or ball.  A disguise or false outward show; a pretense.

DRESSY – casual theater but not cocktail a mix of nice dresses and suits. (See dressy casual.)

COCKTAIL - Suitable for wear on semiformal occasions, receptions, theater, art previews, etc.  This looks like formal only with the hem above the ankle or around the knee...  This depends on the current trend.  Men this does not mean a suit that you would wear to the office or a meeting.  This is the best suit that you own, next to a tux.

SEMI-FORMAL – Cocktail – spectacular dresses but not gowns. Moderately formal: a semiformal dance. 2. Suitable or appropriate for a moderately formal occasion.
