MAR 2, Friday – BEHIND THE CURTAIN SERIES
– 7:00PM - $5.00 412-363-4321 Dance Alloy Theater Studio, 5530 Penn
Avenue. Tony Award Nominee, DONALD BYRD, during an informal wine & cheese
studio showing of his new work-in-progress in the next installment of the Behind
The Curtains Series. Inspired by the senseless loss of countless young lives to
violence, war, careless mistakes and accidents, Byrd began the Interrupted
Narrative. A series of 4 "diaries" created for 4 different companies around the
country, each piece is a story cut short, mid-sentence; a path never fully
explored. The first "chapter," created specifically for DAT, is a visceral work
initially inspired by news coverage of a memorial service held for a young
Pittsburgh teenager killed in a bicycling accident. The impetus for the entire
national project, this moving first "chapter" speaks the words there are no
words for; those of the inconsolable whose loved one was taken too soon and
unexpectedly.

MAR 2, Friday – 2nd URBAN FUSION
LIVE - 8:00PM - $5.00 - 412-363-4550 The Union Project, 801 N. Negley
Ave, Highland Park. Local singer/songwriters Clark Slater, Tony Lee, and Todd
Adleff will take the stage. A first Friday concert series centered on live
music, uniting people and restoring space. The three performers of the evening
have gained fans and acclaim both locally and nationally. Clark Slater, who was
with the popular regional band PUSH before going solo, has been praised
continually by local media over the last two years. “His rich and smoky vocals
and refreshingly rockin’ sound stand out amidst a bland singer-songwriter
uprising,” said Ashlee Green of the Post-Gazette. Song Writers Monthly describes
Todd Adleff as having “a crisp and rootsy sound that has an honest shot of
cracking radio in a big way!" Tony Lee has performed at the region’s finest
venues and opened for such diverse acts as Chicago, Marshall Tucker and The
Monkees.

SHOES – Opening & Press Night - $27.00 - 8:00pm- 412-394-3353 -
Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church, 416 W. North Ave., North Shore.
Quantum Theatre. Created by Karla Boos and Carolina Loyola-Garcia. A flamenco
fable. Adapted from Hans Christian Andersen. Boos leads a humorous journey
through Hans Christian Andersen’s absurdly macabre cautionary tale, starring
Loyola-Garcia’s fierce flamenco as The Shoes. In the tradition of such music
and dance-based projects as Kafka’s Chimp, The Voluptuous Tango, La Tragedie de
Carmen, and even recent El Paso Blue, Quantum’s Artistic Director Karla Boos
again explores the musical side of theatrical language and the mixing of
cultural forms – this time co-opting the great art of flamenco. Even a Red
State dweller would admit The Red Shoes is a tale meant to stifle… uh, TEMPER…
little girls’ impulses toward individuality, pleasure, and that terrible,
attention-hogging sin: VANITY.

This show is the first in a while without our recent guest poets, so we'll be
bringing the big amps. Opening up will be the Improv Project, featuring my good
friend and great bass player Eric Riebling. “When Pittsburgh’s erstwhile
defenders of the avant-jazz-rock keep, the Water Shed 5tet, called it quits, it
provided Pittsburgh’s cultural map with a shake-up of Soviet Union separation
proportions. It can be argued that none of the post-Water Shed groups that have
sprung up in recent times rival their parent in balancing somewhat wide appeal
with sheer musical inventiveness.
