PARTY GEEK HISTORY...
InPittsburgh did the article on the Party Geek. 9/6/00. (See
Press) Just in time for our anniversary. This e-mail began
September 10, 1999. The write-up was in the Art section. I was a little
surprised about that I never considered this art but I guess in some ways it is.
A lot of events are. I met with Steven. Very intelligent up and coming, moving
and shaking editor. He is very talented I was surprised by his age. I wish I
could write as well as him. Sorry geeks you will just have to suffer with my
writing. Look out Pittsburgh he will be someone to reckon with and he is
attractive too. By writing this article for InPgh Steven has given the term geek
a value of pride that will be recognized around Pgh. Thank you Steven! You are
way cool!
There was one thing that he wrote that wasn't exactly accurate. But it was a
GREAT guess. I probably would have guessed the same thing. You go Steven!
I didn't exactly want to have a party or play God. I was thinking that this is
where I am going and I know that my friends are always wondering where to go.
Wouldn't it be nice if we all knew where the hot spot of the week was? I use to
run into people after the events. They would ask me what I did last week? I
would tell them and they would say 'I wish I would have heard about it, I would
have gone'. And that use to happen to me. People would go somewhere like Seven
Springs for a festival and I would hear about it afterward. I have too many
friends to call them every week to find out where all of them are going and
there are so many different groups of them I would not be able to get them all
together. SO instead I started this e-mail and let them decide of it was cool or
not without influence from me. And like InPgh said I would not be responsible
for the success or failure of an event. If you wanted to go fine if not that is
fine too but at least you would know what was happening.
So here is how we started. The first week I selected 19 people with only an
Oasis pub-crawl. The second week I sent out 5 e-mails to 32 key people. (they
could pass it on to friends for which I did not have an e-mail address.) In
these e-mails there was Pgh Brewery, Pgh Operas Kick-Off, PUMP at Family House
Polo, halfway to St. Patricks party at Rosebud, and trying to find a good place
to watch the Steelers. It was between, Valhalla, Shootz and Damons. In the third
week I was worried that people would figure out that it was me because I would
know a lot of the people that were there and they were starting to talk about
the Geek. I did not wish to be discovered. Do do do do. Do do do do. So I lifted
two e-mail list from some other 'events happy' social groups, I was now up to
138. (I told you that I lie and steal, what else is new?) The events for the
week were announcing Carnegie On-tap in Nov (I wanted to make sure everyone knew
this year, a lot of people were upset that they missed the one in the spring.)
and a Winebrats Kick-Off party. After that the e-mailing took on a life of its
own. The new Geeks and original geeks were sending me events and adding people.
I was sending out 2 a week until the events and list grew. It began to take time
so I cut back to a weekly e-mail. I never expected to receive so many personal
heart felt letters. The rewards of the letters of thanks that I have received
has been a cherish gift for my time.
This page has become less personal since it began. Maybe because we are over
3,400 geeks strong now. I believe that it is because we have too many events
now. There is so much to do that we can't make up our mind. But I will not
change how many I list because to each their own that is why I have added the
pick of the week. This is usually where the original 32+ people can be found.
I must admit that I do not have to figure out what to do on the weekends
anymore. Now it is more like, which event do I want to attend? I still usually
follow my friends. They are the ones that unknowingly usually pick the event of
the week. They usually go to the hot spot of the week. So is someone playing God
here? Yes, it is you Pittsburgh! The Party Geeks!
